In today’s blog I want to answer the question:

“We’re struggling to keep up with the work and feeling maxed out like we need to hire another person or two, but can we afford it?”

The answer to this question could be a little complex depending on your situation, but if you’re asking can we afford it, the answer most likely is no.

If you have ample financial resources, then answering this question is super simple and becomes a matter of organization structure and allocating the funds in your budget.

But, if you’re asking because you don’t have the resources or you’re feeling stretched, maybe you’re already struggling to make payroll, the idea of adding another warm body to the payroll might be freaking you out and for good reason.

If this is the case, then your answer is most likely is no, you can’t afford it. So, what should you do? If you’re maxed out and you have an abundance of work to do, the logical, simple answer seems to throw more people at it but you don’t have the money. So what do you do?

You automate. This is what you do. You refocus your efforts on automating some of the internal processes and procedures in your business. If you automate, not only can you eliminate the need for additional staff, you may even be able to consolidate some of the staff you already have – and make those remaining more efficient to boot.

Now, this can be a very, very difficult hurdle for business owners to get across because they think, “oh my gosh, I’ve invested so much time and energy to finding the right staff” or “I can’t possibly let go of any of my people” and this may be true, you may not have to reduce staff. But how can automation help them work more efficiently AND handle the overload of work that’s currently not getting done. That’s the question to address first.

Some staff members may also feel a little insecure – think you are trying to eliminate their position – and hold on to excess work. Be very clear in your communication that automation is for their benefit and it will help the company run more profitably – which is in EVERYBODY’s best interest to having a more secure future.

It may sound harsh, but you may also have some employees who are “dead weight” right now. In fact just reading this a name may pop into your head. You know who these people are. Look at ways you can automate their duties and eliminate the position. It will help the entire company run more efficiently as a whole AND free up the financial resources you need to hire the RIGHT people for the RIGHT position.
